  • got fear?

Posted on April 15th, 2012 jadijohnson No comments

I hate being alone at night … and Satan knows it.  As soon as I let a little apprehension slip in, he pounces, feeding my imagination with images from crime shows I’ve watched.  Maybe you suffer with other fears.  Well, I searched the Bible for verses to soothe my anxiety-filled mind.  Here are a few.  (After you read them, I’ll tell you what I realized!)

I will lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety. (Psalm 4:8)

I will fear no evil, for you are with me; (Psalm 23:4)

I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears. (Psalm 34:4)

If you make the Most High your dwelling — even the Lord, who is my refuge — then no harm will befall you, no disaster will come near your tent. (Psalm 91:9,10)

O Lord, you will keep us safe and protect us from such people forever. (Psalm 12: 7)

You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance. (Psalm 32:7)

When I am afraid, I will trust in you. (Psalm 56:3)

The Lord is my light and my salvation — whom shall I fear?  The Lord is the stronghold of my life — of whom shall I fear? (Psalm 27:1)

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.  Therefore we will not fear … (Psalm 46: 1,2)

You will not fear the terror of night … (Psalm 91:5)

Here is what I realized:  David knew what he was talking about!  He knew from whence his help would come! (Psalm 121:2)

I knew that I had to face this fear head-on.  I didn’t have to live like this any longer.  What I lacked was faith.  I needed to trust in God in ALL things, including fear.

In “Traveling Light” by Max Lucado, he tells us to read Luke 22: 39-44 (Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane).  We turn to it when we look the same.  We read it when we feel the same.  We read it when we feel afraid.  For isn’t it likely that fear is one of the emotions Jesus felt?

And what did Jesus do?  He prayed.  The first one to hear his fear was his Father.

Like Jesus, David turned to God as well.

Fix your eyes on God when you’re afraid.  Turn your eyes upon Jesus.  He of all people understands your fear.

      • I’m so glad you liked my post. Like I told another reader, I was a little ashamed to admit my fear. But if it could help just one other Christian fight off his fear, it would be worth it.

      • Thanks for leaving the nice comment! I hope you’re enjoying your weekend.

    • I wonder how much better each of our lives would be if we made just one simple change and turned to God first when we begin to feel anxiety or fear. How much time I’ve wasted in anxiety over things that never come to pass, when I should have been trusting Christ.

    • Thanks for this. I shall not fear. Jesus is on my side. Good to be reminded especially by the word.

      • I’m so glad you liked my post. I was a little ashamed to admit my fear, but I realized it could help other Christians if I told what helped me. I know this is what God would have us do … help each other.

    • I enjoy Beth Moore Bible Studies also. Which ones have you done? I like to write and I have been reading many non-fiction faith based books.
I just posted Psalm 121. One of my favorites.

      • Hello! Well, I just finished the Book of James with my women’s Bible study. I also did Esther. And my sweet sister provided me with the books for Revelation and Stepping Up. Which ones have you done? What type of writing do you enjoy the most? I love fiction, but blogging has been a lot of fun. Do you have favorite non-fiction books to recommend? I’ll have to read Psalm 121!
        Have a blessed day.

        • The Beth Moore Bible studies I have completed are Fruit of the Spirit and Daniel. I did one on David by myself and I hope to join one on James next fall. Beth Moore enthusiasm for the Scriptures are so infectious. Both my sister and I have become so immersed in the Scriptures since taking her Bible studies.

I have mostly written South Dakota history. I have written two historical Christian fiction novels which I will post shortly. They are on amazon.com
I am reading a book on heaven and one on Moses. There are so many out there that I fear I won’t be able to read them all. Jan

          • I highly recommend the James study. I really enjoyed it. I’m so glad we can purchase the study guide, whether our church has the study or not. I agree Beth is a very special lady.

South Dakota is wonderful. I’ve lived in both Montana and Colorado. They are a far cry from Southern California, where I am now. I miss the beautiful scenery and the wildlife.

Congratulations on your success! I’ve written many fiction novels. I’m trying to concentrate only on the ones written from a Christian perspective.

We’re so alike. I also have a lot of books on my “To Do” list. I have to make myself stick to one until it is finished. (I’m also a Jan as well!)
I wish you a blessed day.
